If you had unprotected sex or if you are worried that your birth control method might not have worked, the Teen and Young Adult Health Centers (TYAHC) can provide you with FREE emergency contraception methods. These methods can stop a pregnancy before it starts. Our providers can meet with you to help you make an informed decision about which type of emergency contraception is right for you.
The sooner a “morning after” pill is taken, the better it works. It can reduce the risk of pregnancy if it is taken within 120 hours (five days) of unprotected sex. Most brand-name and generic “morning after” pills (like Plan B) are available at drug stores and at TYAHC without a prescription. The only pill brand that requires a prescription is ella. “Morning after” pills are not the same as “abortion pills,” which are taken to end pregnancies.
A non-hormonal (copper) IUD (ParaGard) can lower your chance of pregnancy by 99.9% if it’s inserted within 5 days after unprotected sex. It can then continue to act as an effective birth control method for up to 10 years.
